In Memoriam

The Board of Directors of the Harry Dallara Foundation has sadly lost two distinguished Board members in recent months.

On December 12, 2019, James Payne, Director Emeritus of the Foundation passed away at age 91. James was a highly respected and accomplished citizen of Tryon, NC. He was a successful businessman, having developed a limousine company which served many of the Piedmont's residents as well as generations of visitors to Tryon. James was highly committed to the work of the Harry Dallara Foundation, having lived through decades of segregation. He was an ardent advocate for the renovation of the ball field for all children in the community including African-American youth. He also was a passionate supporter of the Tryon All-Stars, a local team of talented African-American baseball players who were denied access to Harmon Field. He believed that this would give the All-Stars their place of honor at Harmon Field that they were never afforded during their playing days.

On March 9, 2020, Stephen Dallara passed away at age 40. Stephen was a founding member of the Foundation Board. He initially conceived of the idea of renovating the ball field at Harmon Field and placing a statue there in honor of his grandfather, Harry Dallara. A successful entrepreneur based in Great Falls, VA, Stephen was actively involved in growing the Foundation and shaping its goals and aspirations. Last year he was particularly active in supporting the February fundraiser at Wofford College and in working with David Deming on the contours of the sculpture of his grandfather. On April 29, 2018, Steve Parris, a dear friend, Member of the Board, and vital collaborator on the work of the Foundation since its inception, passed away.  Steve's contributions to the work of the Foundation were immense.  He arranged video presentations of all major Foundation events, managed our website, our media relations, and contributed to all Board activities.  Steve will be sorely missed, and his work on the Foundation will not be forgotten as we continue to move forward to accomplish our mission.
